Pew Research evaluated the religious and spiritual views of Americans in an attempt to understand the landscape of the country, and their results were fascinating – concluding that Americans as a whole are becoming less religious, however, they are moving towards feelings of ‘spirituality’ at a rapid rate. This shift from structured religion to ‘spiritual but not religious’ marks a significant change for the country, originally built on a heavily religious foundation.
The truth is that there is no quick fix. The journey is going to be challenging, a slow process of shedding previous beliefs, letting go of past hurts and discovering your true self. You are going to struggle, and it is, at times, going to hurt, however, it is through these struggles that we grow and discover the magic of spiritual awakening.
Here are 6 spiritual mantras to assist you in your journey to an awakened soul:
“To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest.” – Pema Chodron
It is basic human nature to gravitate towards safety and security, however living life in our comfort zone will, ultimately, keep us from ever discovering spiritual enlightenment. In order to grow, we must be able to step into the unknown and face challenges. When we are moving along our spiritual journey, the Universe has a way of shaking up our lives just enough to ‘throw us out of the nest’ each time that we get too comfortable, sending us head on into the unknown. While this might be frightening, embrace it!
“Hard times require furious dancing.” – Alice Walker
Dance has long been integrated into religious practices as a means of awakening the spirit and uniting both your physical and spiritual self. While each religion and spiritual leader have their own unique views about this process and its importance in our spiritual journey, most agree that it is an integral part. This isn’t referring to the spiritual absent dancing that is experienced in a dance club on a drunken night – but rather the experience of dancing for the sake of dancing, with no other distraction or purpose.
“People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” – Abraham Lincoln
We are taught by the world as we grow up to look to outside stimuli for happiness – it’s all about the nicest house, the fanciest car, the perfect friendships and the killer wardrobe. Spirituality is about shedding this materialistic view of the world around us, coming back to the true source of happiness which comes from within. No one can control how we are feeling and provide us with true happiness in our lives except for ourselves. Don’t mistakenly place the responsibility for your happiness in the hands of others.
“The highest form of wisdom is kindness.” – The Talmund
One of the biggest changes that you will experience in the path to spiritual awakening is the shift from the hurts and negative energies of your past into a world defined through the eyes of kindness. One of the largest beliefs for those who focus on spirituality is that the world is comprised of energies, and you welcome in the energies that you attract. If you act negatively, you will welcome negativity. If, however, you focus on positivity such as bringing kindness to everyone you encounter, you will, in turn, attract positivity.
“Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were only walls.” – Joseph Campbell
In today’s society, we face many distractions from our spiritual paths, when truly the one focus should be on our spirit and its call to serve. The sooner that we are able to shed the materialistic views that permeate modern day America, the sooner we find our direction in lives will become far clearer. This direction is our true spiritual north. Once you find the path you are destined to be on, you will find that the pieces fall into place and opportunities seem to appear before you.
“Be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn, in that case, you should always be a unicorn.” – Elle Lothlorien, Alice in Wonderland
The negative forces that work to derail you from your spiritual journey will try to convince you that you need to change to fit their mold, that you aren’t ‘good enough’ when you are simply being yourself. Don’t be afraid to be unique and different, this is the best gift that you possess. You don’t need to change who you fundamentally are in order to survive and thrive in the world around you. Instead, focus on understanding who you genuinely are, your true sense of self, and stand tall in this knowledge.
