Picking out books to read is something that can be hard or easy depending on what you’re into and how much of a reader you are. If you are a woman or simply a lover of books I highly recommend reading the following as they are deep and have changed me, to say the least.
12 Books That Will Change You:
1. Fear of Flying by Erica Jong
This book was first published in 1973 and is about a woman trapped in a sexless marriage. She gets into a steamy love affair with another man and in this, she explores all of her fantasies that her legal marriage was not doing.
2. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
This is a book about letting women explore their capacities and encourages them to fight for a place in their career, this something she calls the jungle gym and is a wonderful read for women who are scared to try for more in life.
3. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
I do not need to explain this one, it will fill your soul with all the inspiration you need to make it through whatever you are dealing with. In this book, a young black girl prays for beauty every day. It teaches us about obsession and how lots of people feel the need to fit into society’s image of ‘beauty.’
This is the story of how Alison learned to be an artist from her father, fun home is what she and her brothers referred to the funeral home as and it is quite the read.
5. I Know Why The Caged Birds Sing by Maya Angelou
I am forever falling in love with Maya Angelou’s work. This is just one of the many wonderful books she has released and is without a doubt worth reading.
6. A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf
This book is best read when you want to gain a better look at feminism. This is a very strong book that will have you thinking about things you normally would not.
7. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
This book is something I read at a young age and has stuck with me through the years. It is about a woman and her strong sense of conviction keeping her hopeful through her longing for true love. I love this book and it is without a doubt one of my favorites.
8. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
This book shows tremendous hope even in a state of suffering and fighting to survive. It is tiny and filled with emotion. You will be feeling very differently after reading this one. The Holocaust is something we all need to remember and this book helps us to do so.
9. We Need to Talk About Kevin Lionel Shriver
This book has seen great success and in it examines the evil in our society and shows what happens when evil is right under your own roof. You cannot seem to look away from these intense characters and things are never what they seem.
10. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
This book is just as relevant today as it was when it was published. It is a book that is best read on a wintery morning or night. This book will give you a new sense of love for yourself.
This is one of those books that will have you laughing and in a good mood. I am always happy with Fey’s works, you can tell she puts her all into them.
12. Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood
In this book, long flashbacks take the reader to a girl named Elaine’s childhood where she endured lots of emotional torment from her peers. This shows us just how cruelty can echo in our minds years after the torment has ended.
Have you read any of these and if so which one was your favorite? You can tell a lot about a person by their favorite books. When it comes to passing the time there is nothing like sitting alone with a good book.
